Who was Carrie A. Seaman?

Every community names someone "The Cat Woman." For many years in Provincetown, that woman was Carrie Seaman. A colorful character, she was kindhearted and loved animals. According to Napi Van Derek, "Anybody who found an injured cat, or had no means, would bring it to her." She would get help for it and often shelter it in a Johnson Street house.

A Boston lawyer for 20 years, Carrie Seaman settled here and opened a private law practice with her husband, Joseph. In 1971 she helped to found the Provincetown Animal Shelter. Her caring for unwanted animals continued even beyond her death at the age of 84. Hoping to create a legacy of compassionate care for homeless animals in the Provincetown/Truro area, she bequeathed money for an animal shelter.

Today, the board of CASAS continues her work and dream of a no-kill animal shelter for the Provincetown, Truro and Wellfleet area.
